Digital carbon footprint: how to measure the real impact of your IT fleet

Digital carbon footprint: methodology and the limits of generic tools for a leased IT fleet.

A general carbon assessment is not always enough

A digital carbon footprint assessment aims to quantify the environmental footprint of a company's IT fleet: manufacturing, use, transport, end of life. Many general-purpose carbon accounting tools exist to produce an assessment at company level, but few go down to the individual device, which is where concrete decisions are made (new or refurbished? renew or extend?).

What general-purpose tools measure (and what they do not)

General-purpose carbon accounting platforms usually cover all of a company's emission scopes: energy, travel, purchasing, digital included. This is useful for an overall view and for regulatory reporting (CSRD, BEGES), but digital is often treated as one line among others, with no per-device granularity and no direct link to purchasing or leasing decisions.

Device-by-device granularity

For the IT fleet specifically, the question that matters is not only "how much does my company emit" but "what is the impact of this computer, and what difference would it make if I replaced it with a refurbished one". This is the granularity documented by Colibris, our CSR management tool: each device in the fleet is tracked individually, with a direct comparison between new and refurbished equipment, built into the billing flow of the leasing contract.

How to act on the results

A carbon assessment is only valuable if it leads to decisions. Once the fleet's footprint is documented, the levers remain the same: bring in more refurbished equipment, extend the service life of equipment that still performs well, and organise a traceable end of life rather than systematic renewal.
