Digital technology is today a major environmental issue. According to ADEME, it is responsible for 2.5% of France's carbon footprint. This figure could double by 2030 if no structural change is made. The causes: the multiplication of devices, the growing volume of data exchanged, and the widespread adoption of intensive digital uses.
The rise of artificial intelligence, particularly deep learning models, is considerably increasing the sector's energy consumption. In 2019, an MIT study revealed that training a single natural language processing model emits as much CO₂ as five cars over their entire lifetime. The widespread adoption of AI also requires powerful infrastructure (GPUs, specialized data centers), increasing the environmental impact of the equipment needed.
The ecological footprint of digital technology varies significantly according to age, standard of living, and usage. Wealthier households own more devices (computers, smartphones, connected TVs) and adopt more resource-intensive habits (downloads, HD streaming, online gaming). Conversely, disadvantaged or older populations, less well equipped, are paradoxically more frugal—but often excluded from the opportunities offered by digital technology.
These inequalities raise a dual issue: digital inclusion on one hand, but also environmental justice on the other. If digital ecological transition policies fail to account for these disparities, they risk worsening social inequalities by penalizing the most disadvantaged or least connected populations.
Even the best intentions can be counterproductive. This is the case with the rebound effect: more efficient devices encourage greater consumption, canceling out expected gains. For example, a lower energy cost for a smartphone can encourage more frequent replacement. Similarly, the dematerialization of services (cloud, video conferencing) does not guarantee a net reduction in emissions if it comes with increased usage.
Digital sobriety aims to reduce the ecological impact of digital technology without giving up its benefits. This involves individual actions but also corporate policies. Extending the lifespan of equipment, limiting streaming, favoring wired connections over Wi-Fi, and turning off unused devices are among the most effective actions according to ADEME.
A sobriety strategy also involves better management of equipment lifecycles. Refurbishment, responsible IT leasing, and the pooling of IT resources (sovereign cloud, virtualization) can significantly reduce the carbon footprint. The Responsible Digital label or the government initiative EcoCode (Green Code Initiative) provide useful frameworks for structuring such an approach.
Information remains a fundamental key. According to a survey by Caisse des Dépôts, only a minority of users know the actions that truly reduce their digital impact. Awareness campaigns should target resource-intensive but invisible uses (HD videos, cloud, large attachments) while promoting more sober alternatives.
